Using VCS Teaching Experience

to Receive a Teaching Credential

Senate Bill 57, which took affect in January, 2002, provides the opportunity for teachers in private schools to waive the teacher preparation classes and student teaching necessary for a preliminary California credential. The basic requirements are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher)
  • Six or more years experience at a WASC accredited school, must provide performance evaluations
  • Pass the CBEST
  • Complete a course in Reading
  • Subject Matter Competence—either have a degree from a California college or university in the subject you want to teach or pass the PRAXIS exam.
  • U.S. Constitution: have a college course in government
  • For multiple subject credentials (elementary)—must past the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)

For teachers with 3 or more years of experience at a WASC accredited school, you may waive student teaching.
